To Develop an Integrated Fire Management Plan (IFMP) for Bale Mountains National Park (BMNP)
I Introduction
Frankfurt Zoological Society (FZS) is supporting the Ethiopian Wildlife Conservation Authority (EWCA) to manage the Bale Mountains National Park (BMNP) in Oromia. The BMNP General Management Plan (GMP) identifies the need to develop effective mechanisms to reduce the frequency and extent of wildfires as these can devastate the park’s exceptional natural resources. Although fire is a natural feature of some vegetation types, increased human pressure has led to a change in the fire regime and the BMNP now experiences increasing frequency of uncontrolled fires which are very difficult and dangerous to control.
2. Purpose and Objective of Consultancy
The main objective is to develop an Integrated Fire Management Plan (IFMP) to reduce the risk of wildfires in order to conserve the wildlife populations and safeguard the ecosystem services of the BMNP. The plan should combine elements of FIRE PREVENTION, FIRE PROTECTION, FIRE SUPPRESSION, FIRE RECOVERY. Essential to any IFMP is community engagement and improving community awareness.
