Teams in the field combat hunger on 4 fronts: Nutrition and Health, Food Security and Livelihoods (FSL), Water, Sanitation and hygiene (WASH), and Mental Health and Care Practices (MHCP).
For our Food Security Department in Borena, we are currently looking for the following professional:
Animal Health and Rangeland Management expert
Position General Objective:
Responsible to manage the implementation of Animal health, range land management, Livestock production, feed management and production in partnership with the local partners
Objective 1: Implement livestock development and Animal health support
Activities :
§ Define implementation modalities (identification and registration of beneficiaries, distribution, training, awareness, monitoring etc.) for the livestock and animal health component of the project.
§ Collect and analyse information on animal production and health conditions of the target area especially statistics on animal production and health, feeding/grazing and other related contextual issues.
§ Conduct participatory community dialogue to identify the animal health service providers in the area and assess veterinary drug supply constraints
§ Identify the needs of the most vulnerable populations and propose responses to these needs regarding with improving/increasing the target communities in Animal based livelihood/farming system.
§ Lead the implementation of the planned animal production and Animal health activities and strategies of the project in collaboration with other departments/sectors.
§ Provide technical support and follow up the Field Extension Agents, Animal producer community groups/IGAs- especially Beekeeping and the direct beneficiaries’ activities at grass root level.
§ Travel frequently to project sites/villages and mobilise the targeted stakeholders and beneficiary communities to fulfil the objectives of the project activities.
§ Disseminate update food security situation of the target area and project activity plan for relevant stakeholders
Objective 2: Organise and conduct capacity building training for Beneficiaries
Activities:
§ Identify the training needs of beneficiaries
§ Develop training manual and organize training sessions and participate in the training on animal health, rangeland, fodder production and management
§ Coordinate and conduct training on modern animal production techniques of the proposed activities mainly in sheep and goat, fattening, dairy, beekeeping and Animal forage development issues to target communities.
§ Maintain the partnership and linkage to various stakeholders at district and project level and other relevant NGOs working in the area.
Objective 3: Monitor the progress of the animal health and rangeland management activities
Activities :
§ Monitor the activity of community animal health workers and drug vendors
§ Develop technical standards and specifications used to manage, protect and improve the natural resources of rangelands and related grazing lands to manage forage resources
§ Monitor the implementation of rangeland management activities implemented by CFW.
§ Regulate grazing, and help farmers plan and organize grazing systems in order to manage, improve and protect rangelands and maximize their use.
§ Coordinate activities and sensitize local partners in the field
§ Follow proactively the constraints suggest appropriate solutions
§ Support the FSL PM in developing and preparing monitoring plans and ensure that activities are in line with achieving expected outputs of the Livestock development activities.
Objective 4: Involve in preparation of project progress reports, donor and government reports
Educational Qualifications:
BCS degree in Animal Health, natural resources management, Veternary medicine and related field with a mínimum of three years of experience (preferably in NGO work environment) in animal health and Rangeland management.
Required skills:
Good knowledge of implementing projects; planning skills; Good skill in community dialogue; Good knowledge of community based animal health service delivery systems; Knowledge in Rangeland management in pastoral and/agrarian context, knowledge of the intervention area; Good human relationships; Sense of authority; Good Analytical capacity; Basic computer knowledge
Relevant Work Experience:
The candidate/employee should have proven experience, skills and knowledge especially on shoats, fattening, dairy, apiculture, animal health and feed/fodder management and livestock extension service and rangeland management;
Experience in the region is required; previous experience in arid and semiarid parts of Ethiopia is preferred;
